Guide updated · long-form planning notes — verify live conditions with DBCA
Deep practical notes for Yanchep visits — koala-boardwalk ethics, Crystal Cave booked-out Plan B, Ghost House ruins without invented hauntings, spring wildflower timing, summer heat / bushfire, and why Henry White is not a day carpark. Written like an operator’s manual, not a brochure. Always verify conditions, fees and safety with Explore Parks WA / DBCA before you travel.
How to use these: koala colony before you promise kids a wild WA koala · cave booked-out article before a walk-up Saturday · Ghost House ruins before you climb limestone · heat note before a January 12 km start. Pair with a printable itinerary when you want a timeline.
Best for: Anyone whose Saturday still says “we’ll just get cave tickets at McNess”
Decision guide when the 10 am–3 pm Crystal Cave sessions are full — the walk still exists, the gate is not a dare, and Ghost House is not the substitute.
Decision first: if you do not hold tickets, you are not “doing the cave” today.
Plan B that still counts: Caves Walk (~4.5 km) + Dwerta Mia / Boomerang Gorge + koala boardwalk + picnic oval.
Do not loiter at the meeting point or enter closed holes. Cabaret Cave is a functions venue, not a free substitute.
Best for: Walkers who want the ruins in context without folklore padding
A short history note for the limestone remains on the Ghost House Walk — Henry White country, look-and-leave, no invented hauntings or cultural stories.
The ruins sit on the 12.4 km Class 3 Ghost House loop — there is no drive-up lookout.
Henry White was the early settler/caretaker associated with caves and the later campground name. We do not invent a biography beyond public official histories.
Look from the trail. Do not climb unstable limestone.
Best for: Spring travellers deciding half-day family vs Ghost House
When woodland and heath typically bloom, why August–October is the kinder visitor window, and why you still start at McNess instead of walking into the kangaroo paw.
Planning window roughly August–October — not a live bloom cam.
Yanchep rose, kangaroo paw and orchids appear in official/visitor language; we do not list every species.
Stay on marked trails. Bloom photos from closed heath are a fail. Dieback is the rule, not a slogan.
Best for: Visitors who want the honest version before they tell kids these are wild Western Australian koalas
What the managed koala colony is (since 1938), what it is not, and how to visit the ~240 m boardwalk without turning names into a fake wildlife guarantee.
Managed colony since 1938 — not native to current WA wild populations.
Official koala viewing page still shows a 2024 named list. DBCA news (re-checked 26 Aug 2026) lists six: Koodah, Miffy, Louie, Franklin-Doogsie, Poppy and Djilba. This site is not a census — [VERIFY] live.
Best for: Anyone whose January plan still starts with a late breakfast and a 12.4 km loop
Operator notes for December–March: start early, carry water, treat fire danger as real, and do not start Ghost House at 11 am because the cave is air-conditioned.
Heat and bushfire are the relevant summer hazards. No snow. No crocodiles. No tides.
Check emergency.wa.gov.au and alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au the morning you travel. This site is not live status.
Ghost House: most of a day, lunch and water — start at Walk Safe opening or pick Wetlands / koala instead.
Best for: Day visitors tempted by vacant-looking grass at Henry White
Decision guide when the picnic ovals look full and the campground looks empty — those sites are booked Park Stay camping, not overflow parking.
Henry White Oval is the official campground. Book parkstay.dbca.wa.gov.au only.
Day parking belongs in signed visitor-precinct bays and picnic ovals.
Camping fee is per person per night plus vehicle entry — additional-facilities $20 / $15 / $5 planning figures because there are showers (26 Aug 2026 check).
