Summer heat and bushfire at Yanchep
Operator notes for December–March: start early, carry water, treat fire danger as real, and do not start Ghost House at 11 am because the cave is air-conditioned.

Best for: Anyone whose January plan still starts with a late breakfast and a 12.4 km loop
Unofficial guide — always verify track conditions, closures, fees and safety with Explore Parks WA / DBCA. Place photos are Wikimedia Commons / CC where credited — not official Explore Parks WA imagery and not live conditions.
Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park fees, Parks Passes, Crystal Cave tickets and official Park Stay bookings are never affiliated.

Yanchep is close to Perth. That does not make January sand a shopping-centre loop. Open woodland, limestone and picnic ovals all take UV. Ghost House adds hours of it.
Fire danger and total fire bans are official products. If emergency.wa.gov.au says stop, you stop. This unofficial page does not override that.
Say the plan out loud before you leave the CBD: precinct day (koala, picnic, short walk) or Walk Safe Ghost House with an early start. A late breakfast plus 12.4 km is how heat illness happens.
Always verify alerts, fire danger and McNess hours the morning you travel. Independent unofficial. Not walked for this date.
The decision before you leave Perth
Say it out loud: precinct day (koala, picnic, short walk) or Walk Safe Ghost House with an early start. A late breakfast plus 12.4 km is how heat illness happens.
Download Emergency+. Official visitor guidance: without coverage you cannot call 000. Coverage is often usable near McNess and can drop on longer trails — we do not publish carrier maps.
Screenshot alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au and emergency.wa.gov.au on home Wi-Fi. Last town fuel/food in Yanchep / Two Rocks. Joondalup is the larger supermarket and hospital corridor. Pack water as if the kiosk is shut.
What summer actually does to this park

Picnic ovals and koala rails still work if you start early and carry water. Wetlands Walk is the cooler circuit — mosquitoes after rain still exist. Ghost House sand after 11 am in January is a common fail. Crystal Cave is ~18 °C underground; the walk above is not.
Bushfire is the relevant seasonal hazard. Total fire bans and park alerts are official. If they say stop, you stop. Statewide H5 bird-flu banner (26 Aug 2026 snapshot) is not a Yanchep closure — keep distance from sick wildlife; report 1800 675 888.
No snow, no crocs, no tides, no mandatory 4WD for the standard visit. Heat plus fire plus sand is enough.
Plan B that still counts
Plan B one — koala + Wetlands Walk + picnic, leave by early afternoon. One slow boardwalk lap if the rails are busy.
Plan B two — booked cave + short limestone walk (Caves Walk or Dwerta Mia), then home. Do not loiter at the gate if the tour is full.
Plan B three — do not go if fire danger or a park alert says so. A cancelled day is competence. Plan B four — Woodlands Walk if anyone is not a five-hour group. Never invent Ghost House as heat Plan B.
Camping and fire
Henry White campers: unpowered, drinking water not guaranteed, fire rules are official. Communal pit only when season and bans allow. Chopped wood may be provided; collecting or bringing your own is often prohibited — [VERIFY].
Day visitors: do not light anything on an oval. Do not occupy booked campsites as shade parking. No dogs either way unless official assistance-animal rules say otherwise.
Yanchep Inn is commercial lodging — a different till. Town beds in Yanchep / Two Rocks / Joondalup if you wanted sheets and air-con instead of an unpowered January night.
Packing that is not optional
Water for every person (2 L+ per adult on a Ghost House day is a common warm-day planning figure). Hat, high SPF, sunglasses. Closed-toe shoes. Lunch that survives a warm pack. Simple first aid and blister care.
Kit searches live on Gear after the plan is solid — not instead of checking emergency.wa.gov.au. Park fees are never affiliated. This unofficial site does not sell water.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is the park closed in summer?
Official wording describes the park as open every day of the year — [VERIFY] closures. Open is not the same as “Ghost House is a good idea at noon.” Check alerts and emergency.wa.gov.au.
Can we hide in Crystal Cave until the heat drops?
Only if you hold a ticket for a real session. The cave is not a drop-in air-raid shelter. Surface walks still need water.
Campfires at Henry White in January?
Treat summer as unlikely for campfires. Follow Park Stay rules and emergency.wa.gov.au. Communal pit is a cooler-months maybe (often discussed Apr–Oct when conditions permit) — [VERIFY].
Does sea breeze fix it?
The coast can feel different. Inland sand and ovals still cook. Pack water as if the breeze were a rumour.
Do I still need Walk Safe in summer?
If you are walking Ghost House or extended trails, yes — register at McNess. Heat does not waive Walk Safe. If McNess cannot register you, do not start.
