Caves Walk Trail

Area: Crystal Cave & limestone country

Loop from McNess past Crystal Cave (and toward Cabaret / Yonderup context). Limestone, some sandy/gravel middle section, views to Boomerang Gorge and tuarts. Book the cave separately if you want underground.

Do not pair: Do not add Ghost House after a 3 pm cave. That is how people finish in the dark.

Turnaround: Short-cut is “skip the outer loop and return to McNess” — stay on marked paths.

  • Arriving for a cave tour with no booking in school holidays
  • Treating Cabaret Cave as a public show cave
  • Class 3 loop — some sandy and rocky limestone
  • About 2 hours
  • About 4.5 km loop [VERIFY]
  • Effort: moderate
  • Best for: Pairing a booked Crystal Cave tour with a half-day walk — not a substitute for the cave ticket

Distance, grade, time, vehicle rules, hours and open/closed status change — always verify with Explore Parks WA / DBCA (exploreparks.dbca.wa.gov.au) and alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au before you go.

Where you start

McNess House Visitor Centre

Purpose-built walkways near the start/end; sandy gravel between cave precincts. [VERIFY] live notes.

How to get there

  1. Same sealed 2WD approach as the rest of the developed park. Park as signed; pay or show a pass.
  2. Book Crystal Cave at McNess or via official Explore Parks pages if you want the tour — walking past the meeting point is not a cave entry.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. If pairing with a cave tour, book first, then walk — or walk first and protect the tour clock. Typical tour ~45 minutes, often several sessions a day [VERIFY].
  2. Stay on the marked loop. Cabaret Cave is a function venue — exterior/context only unless you have a booked event.
  3. Height restriction on Crystal Cave (lowest point about 1.23 m, bending required) — fitness needed. Not a self-guide.

Walk plus booked cave, not a treasure hunt

This loop is the honest half-day if Crystal Cave is the hero. The cave is the Perth-metro tourist cave — guided, ticketed, about 45 minutes, ~18 °C underground. The walk is limestone and tuart above it. Trails WA lists about 4.5 km, Class 3, about two hours. Not walked for this date.

Official: tours daily, book at McNess or online. Typical clock about five sessions — 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm — [VERIFY]. Companion Card bookings via the park office — use official channels, not this website.

Day shape with a booking

Best shape: McNess, confirm the tour time, walk the loop so you arrive at the meeting point 10–15 minutes early, do the tour, then picnic or koala boardwalk. Worst shape: Ghost House all morning, sprint to a 2 pm tour.

If the tour is booked out, still walk the loop. That is Plan B that still counts. Do not loiter at the gate or enter closed holes.

Underground vs on the loop

Underground: guided, formations, stream-cave story, stairs, lowest restriction around 1.23 m (bending), fitness needed. Do not touch formations. Not a stroller product.

On the loop: sand, short limestone inclines, rocky bits, sun, views into Boomerang Gorge. Cabaret Cave is a function venue — exterior only. Yonderup is not the standard Crystal Cave product.

Tickets and fees

Cave tour planning figures [VERIFY]: Adult $16 / Child $8 / Concession $12 / Family $40. Vehicle park entry is extra. Parks Passes do not cover cave tours. Aboriginal Cultural Experience uses the same advertised price band; public sessions commonly Sunday and public holidays 2 pm and 3 pm — [VERIFY].

Golf is a different product (9 holes $11 / 18 $15 planning figures — [VERIFY]) and is not a shortcut off this trail.

Hazards and reverse

Surface: heat, sand, trips. Underground: stairs, low roof, people who freeze at the first descent. Say so at McNess before you pay if that is likely.

Automatic reverse: no booking and a full tour, anyone refusing to stay on the path, heat on the gorge section. Plan B: koala boardwalk + Wetlands Walk still counts as Yanchep.

Limestone, Country, no souvenirs

Whadjuk and Yued Country. Do not pocket formation chips. Do not leave the path for a secret entrance. Public cultural interpretation belongs on official tours and signs — this page will not invent it.

Extra tips

  • Do not assume Yonderup adventure caving is the same product as Crystal Cave.
  • Watch marker confusion with Ghost House yellow.
  • Toilets at McNess, not guaranteed at every limestone outcrop.

Often paired with Koala boardwalk— only if energy and weather allow.
